What To Wear On A Date (Tips For Dating)

Posted 23rd August 2009 | No Comments

Deciding what to wear on a date, particularly a first date, can be quite a stressful process. There is of course, no specific outfit for each specific dating venue, but there are 2 main considerations you should always bear in mind first;

  1. Always dress appropriately for the dating setting. E.g, if you are going to a funfair, high heels are not a good call, if you are going to a gallery, a tight-fitting short skirt will look a little odd, if you are going for a meal, a pair of training shoes is not the way forward. Use your common sense.
  2. Dress in a manner that you are accustomed to and one that is your usual style of dressing. Although you obviously want to look great, do not risk inventing a totally new image that simply isn't you, it may well create the totally wrong impression. Also, this doesn't mean that if you always wear jeans and trainers for example, you needn't worry about making an effort - you must . The least you can do is make sure the jeans are clean, but try your best to get some shoes - it will make a huge difference

Ok, so now you know the ground rules of what to wear on a date, let's look at some other helpful pointers.

For the ladies...

  • Accentuate some of your best attributes - whether that be your legs, your neck, shoulders or bust, be willing to put a little on show and be proud of your attributes. Don't be too revealing though, as that can give the wrong impression for obvious reasons - remember less is more
  • Stay clear of overdoing it with the jewellery  It might be ok for Jimmy Saville, but being on a date is not about showing off your entire collection
  • Wear colours that compliment and don't fight your skin tone
  • Go easy on the makeup. The more makeup you wear, the harder it is to see your natural beauty, so subtlety is the way forward. Plus too much makeup is a turn off for most men.  If applying makeup is not your forte, then you could do a lot worse than spending 10 minutes to check out some make up tips
  • Avoid ill-fitting bras - there is nothing a man dislikes more than seeing breasts spilling over the top of a bra cup
  • Be sparing with the perfume. Female perfume is much stronger than male aftershave and can be stiffling in its effects. So many women make the mistake of perfume overkill and there is simply no need for it. A good tip for wearing perfume is to spray the air and walk through the mist and apply to your body pulse points only, e.g. wrist and neck

For the men...

  • When wearing a tie, make sure that the tie and shirt match, not only in terms of colour but in pattern too. The best bet is to wear a solid tie with a patterened shirt or a solid shirt with a patterned tie. Also make sure that the tie length is a near to the belt as possible.
  • Make sure that your shoes are clean and that includes the heal. If you think your heals are worn down notably, then make time to get them re-healed before you step out. A woman can tell a lot about a man through his shoes
  • For a more casual look, unbutton the first 2 buttons of your shirt but no more. Too much chest on show isn't a good look. O, and make sure you iron the shirt too! Most shirts are cotton and so need to be ironed by a hot iron - normally the 3rd setting is the cotton setting (always check the shirt composition first though before diving straight in with hot iron)
  • Trousers need to be ironed, with or without a crease depending on their natural style. The length of the trouser should be such that when you are standing straight, the bottom of the trouser leg should just sit on the top of heal. Trousers that are obviosuly too short or too long will not do you justice
  • Unless you are a confident dresser, the general rule with sock-ware is that you want to match the socks as closely as possible with the SHOE colour and NOT the trouser colour. Play it safe and go with a solid sock colour.

Hopefully on reading this post you'll be much clearer on what to wear on a date.

Good luck!

The color selected should suit your skin tone, the dress should suit your body
shape and size, it ought to fit you in all the right places.
•  In general avoid something too revealing, it might sky rocket his ‘expectations’.
Leave something to his imagination, let his excitement build up, let him anticipate
what good things and pleasures await him rather than killing the fun by revealing
too much!
•  However there’s nothing wrong in showing a bit of cleavage here and some legs
there only if that is what you are and you can carry it off with the confidence and
swagger of Angelina Jolie!
•  Remember, feeling sexy is important, but then as they say ‘sexy is the state of
the mind’.

Make up and accessories

•  Don’t use very heavy make-up, which will most likely leave an impression of
artificiality about you. Be confident and proud of the way you look, you don’t
need to embellish your natural beauty under tons of make up.
•  I will tell you a secret: most men can appreciate natural beauties, and if this one
doesn’t, well, take a long hard look and rethink, do you really want him?
•  Use light make-up only to accentuate your facial features and to match the
general theme of your look and style.
•  Don’t use too much of perfume, it can be very off putting, use just enough to
mask any unpleasant odor. You want him to like and appreciate the uniqueness
of your natural scent. Remember, anyone can put on Channel No. 5, but no one
can replicate your natural scent!
•  Keep the use of jewelry or other accessories to the minimum, just enough to add
zip and excitement to your outfit. Why should you let your accessories take his
focus away from you? The first date is hardly an occasion to display your bling
factor!
